The
Salt March undertaken by Mohandas K. Gandhi, the Mahatma
and his band of 78 handpicked marchers was one of the
most inspiring events in the history of the freedom
movement of India. This battle of “right against
might”, as Gandhiji described the Salt Satyagraha,
truth force, inspires people and movements for rights,
justice and freedom around the world even today, 75
years later. Mahatma Gandhi and his band of marchers
walked 241 miles in 24 days and made a permanent place
for themselves in history.
The simplicity of the action and the honesty with which
it was executed left their opponents, the British colonial
power, bewildered and defenceless. Although in the aftermath
a brutal campaign to crush the Salt Satyagraha was unleashed
by the colonisers, they failed to curb the spirit of
the Satyagrahis, soldiers of truth. The world sympathised
with this just cause and admired the courage of its
honest and nonviolent foot soldiers.
In this section we have tried to provide as much multi
media information as we could gather about the March
to Dandi and the Salt Satyagraha of 1930. One of the
most inspiring episodes of the nonviolent battle for
India’s freedom.
