Walk for Peace, Justice and Freedom”
12th March to 7th April 2005.
The “International Walk for Peace, Justice
and Freedom” will be flagged off from
Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad On 12th March 2005.

miles, 24 days, a 61 year old did it 75 years ago. ARE
YOU UP TO IT? Come walk the GANDHI Walk.
Walk for your cause, walk for your belief. Walk to reaffirm
your faith in peace and nonviolence.
Participants are encouraged to walk or cycle the entire
route till Dandi, 241 miles away on the West Coast of
South Gujarat. Camps will be established at the same
places where Mahatma Gandhi and his band of marchers
halted during the epic march. After walking for 24 days
the participants will reach Dandi on the evening of
the 5th of April and participate in the finale on the
beach of Dandi on 6th April, exactly Seventyfive years
after Mahatma Gandhi picked up a fist full of Salt and
launched the country wide Salt Satyagraha as a prelude
to Civil Disobedience.
Participants
will camp at Karadi a tiny hamlet close to Dandi, where
Gandhi had stayed after breaking the Salt Law till his
arrest. On 7th morning participants will be bussed to
Dharasana the site of the raid on the Dharasana Salt
Works. It was here that the Non-Violent Satyagrahis
were mercilessly beaten by the colonial police, many
lost there lives, many more were injured and a wast
number were arrested. A Monument to this act of Violent
suppression of Non-Violent defience stands at the spot
today. From here we come back to Gandhi Smriti station
near Dandi, (after his arrest Gandhi was secretly taken
to a level corssing, the Frontier Mail train was halted
at the gate and Gandhi and his captors were put aboard.
Just before Borivali, a suburb of Mumbai, at a level
corssing the train was again halted Gandhi was bundled
off and put in a waiting car and driven directly to
Pune's Yervada Jail and detained.), and board a special
train which will bring all to Mumbai.
Descendants of the original marchers will be traced
and invited to attend the function where their ancestors
will be honoured with commemorative plaques by the dignitaries.
A daylong celebration of the 75 anniversary of the Salt
Satyagraha will be held on the beach of Dandi.
During the comemorative walk, every evening, the participants
will be able to listen to talks on the original Dandi
Yatra by Gandhian historians and eminent Gandhian experts,
see biographical feature films and documentaries. To
acquaint the international participants with Indian
culture and entertain them, cultural performances will
be arranged, demonstration of Khadi spinning and weaving
will also be given. One day the evening portion of the
walk will be started later than usal the walk will be
conducted at night. Participents will hold lit candles
or torches. It will be a torch lit night march. The
date will be specified later.
To provide visual effects and a bit of drama, a flight
of hot air balloons will follow the participants everyday.
Taking off as the walk comences and landing at the afternoon
and night halts. The hot air balloons will be used to
stream banners bearing messages of world peace and other
inspirational quotes on peace and nonviolence.
The camps will also be open to sellers of Khadi, handicraft,
village industry and Gandhian literature. Traditional
relaxing massage will be provided on payment to those
participants who desire such services.
Although all participants will be encouraged to walk
the entire route from start to finish. People will be
allowed to walk for short spells also. Those who walk
the entire route or a minimum of 100 miles will be presented
with mementoes specially created for the event, as well
as a completion certificate. Others will be given a
certificate of participation mentioning the number of
miles they walked. Participants will be encouraged to
find sponsors who will donate money to the charities
or causes nominated by the participants.
Registered
participants will have to check in with the organisers
two days before the comencement of the International
Walk for Peace, Justice and Freedom.
Arrangements:-*
Accommodation*
Tented
accommodation will be provided, 10 people will share
one tent. Organisers will form groups of ten participants
before commencement of the Walk, participants will
walk according to groups thus formed, to assist and
guide the participants, one guide/facilitator will
be assigned to each group of ten participants. Participants
are free to form their own groups of ten beforehand,
and register as one group. Please bring your own sleeping
bag/bedding and personal consumables as well as toiletries.
Bathing and toilets will be in a designated area and
will be of very elementary facilities in nature. Bathing
and toilet facilities will be separate for men and
women. Camps will be properly lit and reasonable security
will be provided by organisers. Tents and entire camps
will be no-smoking zones.
We request participants to carry minimum baggage.
One bag and a bedding roll per participant will be
transported from camp to camp by the organisers. Transportation
of additional luggage will be charged as per weight
and numbers. Bags will be checked at the time of handing
in and sealed in front of the owner. Participants
are requested to ensure that when the bag is handed
over the seals are intact. All Electronic items, phones,
cameras, laptop computers, PDA’s will have to
be carried by participants.
According
to our arrangments, participants in the event will
have to sleep on sleeping mats spread on the floor
of the tents. For those who find it difficult to sleep
on the floor, we are trying to arranged for a limited
number of cots. Individuals requiring cots will have
to pay rental charges for those cots. The rental charges
for the cots will be put up shortly.
Registered
participants requiring cots are requested to inform
us immediately and no later than 2nd March 2005.
Simple
vegetarian Indian food will be provided for breakfast,
lunch, tea or coffee in the afternoon and dinner.
Participants are free to carry their own food or food
supplement but it should be vegetarian. The meaning
of vegetarian is no meat, no fish, no poultry, no
eggs.

litres of mineral water per day per participant will
be provided. Additional water will have to be purchased
by participants.
